A Naija stories competition - The vote chronicles

The Nigerian general elections are around the corner. The registration exercise has just been completed, and the candidates from the various parties are crisscrossing the nation, campaigning for the votes of the Nigerian electorate. A lot of media attention is being given to the event, and this underscores how important the process of making a choice is, whether at a national level, or even in our individual lives.

So Naija Stories is launching a writing contest called “The Vote Chronicles”. The competition will be centred on the theme of people making – or not making – choices or casting votes, and the process through which they go about doing this. It is our belief that telling and broadcasting stories on this theme will promote a debate about the process itself, and how it is viewed specifically in Nigeria. We also hope it will raise awareness about the April elections, and encourage more people to go out and vote.

Contest Guidelines:

1. Register at Naijastories.com and submit a 600 words story on votes, or making life choices, and how it can affect future outcomes.

Dates for Contest:

Submissions end on Friday, March 25th. The winner will be announced by April 18th 2011.

Prizes :

First place winner – $150, Second place winner – $100, and Third Place winner – $50.

Hand-Deliver Invitations to Gen. Buhari and President Goodluck for the Youth-Focused Debate

WHEN: Wednesday, March 16, 2011, 11:00 AM

WHAT: Young Nigerians represent 70 percent of the population yet their concerns and issues are not present on the national agenda. A confirmed tally of 73.5 million registered voters will participate in this year's election – a 20 percent increase from 2007. Of these, an estimated 65 percent are voters under 35 years of age. Across Africa, the youth are grasping the potential of their generation and have emerged as a political force of change. In Nigeria, the youth will not sit silent and let this moment pass us by. Together, we are asking the presidential candidates, “What About Us?” This time, we want answers.

Nigeria youths made their voices clear on www.whataboutusnigeria.org with more than 8000 votes in just 11 days for the top six candidates they want to see debate on March 25th at the Shehu Musa Yar’adua Centre. In ranking order, President Jonathan Goodluck (PDP), Mr. Nuhu Ribadu (ACN), Gen. Muhammadu Buhari,(CPC) Chief Dele Momodu (NCP), Professor Pat Utomi (SDMP) and Reverend Chris Okotie (FDP) emerged as the candidates of choice. Education, poverty, power, security, corruption and the economy were also identified as the issues that are of significant concern to the youth.

Over the past few weeks, organizations involved with “What About Us?” have also worked tirelessly with a cross-section of electoral stake holders on the national and international stage, making useful contributions to increase the likelihood of free, credible, transparent and participatory elections, including Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN), Nigerian Supreme Council for Islamic Affairs (NSCIA), The Federation of Muslim Women’s Association in Nigeria (FOMWAN), Policy and Legal Advocacy Centre (PLAC), National Democratic Institute (NDI), Democratic Governance for Development (UNDP), the Commission for Presidential Debates, and the US Embassy. The campaign has also held several discussions with the top candidates’ campaign managers and even some cases, the candidates themselves to ask them to answer the youth’s call.

Today – just two weeks until the event – all but Gen. Buhari and sitting President Goodluck have listened to the unified voice of the youth and committed to participate.

This is a call to action to every Nigerian, young and old, to stand in solidarity and support the “What About Us?” initiative. These leaders need to share their vision because we refuse to follow blindly on April 9th.

Where: Prior to the press conference, “What About Us?” will hand-deliver invitations to the campaign headquarters of PDP and CPC in Abuja, to state our case in broad daylight and deliver the notice that the youths in Nigeria will not be ignored. Noted celebrities and representatives from youth groups across Nigeria will join the envoy to ask in a united voice, “What About Us?”

VVF is an abnormal fistulous tract extending between the bladder and the vagina that allows the continuous involuntary discharge of urine into the vaginal vault. The menace of VVF in Nigeria:

Many girls aged 11-15 in Nigeria become mothers either after early marriage to older men or through accidental pregnancy as a result of sexual intercourse with peers. Their small pelvic sizes cause most of these young girls to experience obstructed labor. Unskilled birth attendants simply cut through the vagina to create passage for the baby which results in vestico vagina fistula (VVF), the leakage of urine and feces through the vagina. The malodorous nature of the condition causes the women with VVF to be outcast by society. There are hundreds of thousands of such cases throughout the federation. The IEC Task Force on VVF was therefore established by the Federal Ministry of Health and Social Services to increase awareness, developing educational materials to focus upon the problem, trend, and solution. Institutional problems, however, have limited the achievements of the task force. Two VVF centers have been established in Kano and Uyo, while two nongovernmental organizations are also working on prevention and treatment. The circumstances surrounding the development of VVF in a girl and a young woman are described. An 11.5 year old primary school pupil in Ikot Ekpene, Akwa Ibom State, received no antenatal care and suffered a two-week long labor during which she was transferred back and forth between traditional birth attendants, native doctors, and the church. The forcing of a long stick through the mouth to the abdomen eventually forcefully expelled a dead, decomposed baby. The subject had multiple uteral rupture and underwent twenty repair operations over four years to rehabilitate her. Even so, she may never bear a child or have a husband. A second case, a 21-year old final year university student in the Arts, attended an antenatal clinic for 38 weeks during her pregnancy. She stopped going to the clinic because her church, the Christian Deliverance Center in Akwa Ibom state, prophesied that her labor would be complicated and lead to her death after delivery through C.S. Her labor lasted for three days after which she delivered a dead baby. Profuse bleeding and the inability of her attendants to remove the placenta prompted a return to the hospital. It was then discovered that she had developed VVF, but she insisted upon being discharged before the repair operation arguing that the condition would be cured in her church. The expected healing did not take place, so the woman returned three months later for a repair. Health personnel found this time that she was again pregnant. This second fetus was borne through C.S, then died later due to the overall unskilled interference with her pregnancy. The author stresses the need to lessen the influence of religion on the reproductive health decision making and behavior of women in Nigeria.http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/12318635

Building on momentum from a mass voter registration drive, a coalition of several youth empowerment groups and blogs, including Vote or Quench, Enough is Enough Nigeria, Sleeves Up, and Nigeria Leadership Initiative, are calling for the first-ever presidential youth centered debate in Nigeria. Looking ahead to the April elections, the debate would focus on the key issues affecting a critical voting demographic, with the age group of 30 and under representing 70% of the population.

The debate will be a direct conversation with Nigerian youth, inviting presidential candidates to answer questions posed by young Nigerians, at home and abroad, via social media networks including Facebook and Twitter, text message and phone, about key topics of concern. For the first time, the candidates will have a platform to share their agenda with the nation in a live-televised format, laying out specific and concrete solutions. The debate is tentatively scheduled for the last week of March, 2011.

“It is easy for politicians to promise change without having a clue about the realities Nigerian youth face every day. However, we know that their decisions now will largely determine our future so we want to know where they stand. This time around, we are engaged, aware and empowered, and believe that our vote should be earned and not expected,” the group said in a joint statement.

The group’s mission started on January 11th, 2011, with the #IfNaijaVotes donate your status initiative, prompting Nigerians across the globe to voice their predictions on the nation’s prospects if free and fair elections are held. The group now seeks to further educate the Nigerian youth on the missions and motives of presidential aspirants and will continue to collaborate on various initiatives to drive voter awareness and participation.

Summary of Debonair book swap party

You know an event is going to be successful when guests start arriving one hour before the event is scheduled to hold.

Debonair’s first in-store event, a book-swap party, attracted over three hundred guests who had a lot of fun!

The event held at Debonair Bookstore on 294 Herbert Macaulay Way, Sabo Yaba, Lagos on Friday 21st January 2010. The evening started with an introductory speech by the General Manager of Debonair Bookstore, Mr Okunuga. He provided basic information on how the book swap will take place and took a few questions from guests at the event.

Thereafter, he invited the CEO of Debonair Bookstore, Mr Adebola Omololu for a short speech. Mr. Omololu welcomed the throngs of people at the swap party and encouraged them to network and make as many friends as possible. He also encouraged everyone to take advantage of Debonair Bookstore’s extended working hours of 9am-9pm Mondays through Saturdays as well as 12 noon to 6pm on Sundays.

In addition, he told the gathered crowd that Debonair operates both a brick and mortar store as well as Nigeria’s first fully integrated online bookstore on www.debonairbookstore.com which provides access to over 2 million book titles.

After the CEO’s speech, there was a poetry reading by Mr. Chiedu Ifeozo from his book, ‘Thoughts on a page’ which was well received.

Ms Geraldine Iheme, a participant of Big Brother Africa – The Revolution, also had a short reading from her book – Disfigured Emotions. After her reading, she signed autographs, took pictures and mixed with the crowd. She was at the event with her twin and they looked glamorous!

Dr Malcolm Fabiyi, a visiting professor at the Lagos Business School who is also running for a Senate seat in the Nigerian House of Assembly also gave a speech about knowledge and expanding one’s knowledge frontiers.

Mr Ayo Adedeji, a consummate entrepreneur and author of ‘Mind Your Business’ gave a passionate speech about why we need more entrepreneurs and the road to wealth.

Attendees also got to meet with the former Nigerian Commissioner for Insurance, Chief Dipo Bailey who attended the event as a guest of Debonair’s CEO.

After these speeches, the book-swap itself began in earnest. People swapped novels, romance titles, business titles etc and some people created a section for ebooks and swapped digital editions of various books.

The media was in full force with as many as 6 newspapers, a radio station and a TV crew from NN24 covering the event.

All in all it was a night of fun, music and finger-licking. There was only one question on the mouths of most guests; when is the next one holding?

This weeks poem is not really a new one but it was one of those poems you write and you ask yourself, was that any good? Or was It a bit to personal. I still enjoy reading it, and I've been thinking about those words a lot recently, in truth, like many, I'm still discovering just who I am, learning and evolving everyday, but there's one thing I'm sure of, and that’s who I'm not. The Kids’ Clean Club is a Non-Governmental Organization that aims at raising a generation of physically, mentally and environmentally clean children across Nigeria and the World. they intend to do this by creating awareness amongst children, about the effects of pollution and global warming, and how they can make a change in their environment and going a step further to teaching them about patriotism, etiquette, motivation, dignity, integrity, savings, and at the same time harnessing their God given talents.

In order to raise funds, the Organization is organizing a Fundraising /Benefit dinner tagged ‘For the love of Nigeria’ which will be on the 12th of February 2011. A ticketed event costing N20, 000 for a single ticket and N30, 000 for tickets that admits two (2) people. The N30, 000 ticket for two, also attracts a day at La Campange Tropicana for the couple, after showing up at the event.

Other benefits include networking at the dinner, an opportunity to showcase your business at our event stands (the price list will be made available on request) and also firsthand information of events the organization and other affiliated companies organize.

The Farafina book review is here again! On the 6th of November, 2010 at TerraKulture, we would be hosting Eghosa Imasuen, the author of To Saint Patrick. Ace journalist, Toyin Akinosho will be reviewing the book while Wana of 92.3 Inspiration FM would be moderating.

To Saint Patrick is a work of alternate history. Set in Benin City after elections, Hadiza and Ayo, police officers are investigating a murder. They soon find themselves embroiled in a set of larger and more dangerous intrigues that could cost them all they have worked for.

The future of our nation is hungry with ambition
But the classrooms are empty, and jobs are scanty
We celebrate others, but when will it be our own turn
The pages turn and more people continue to run
To them, anywhere is better than here
here our words are suffocated
And the restless are silenced

Take a journey on our highways turned no-ways
And you will see many victims of this illiterate democracy
classrooms with no roofs
And children playing football with no shoes
Do or die, would you die for your country?
Smoking kills, but greed ultimately destroys

The Sun sets on inflated projects with no tomorrow
When will that new hospital come, we may never know
Our leaders don’t go there, so what do they know
Trading stock and lives, on the exchange
Like a poker game of pocket change
We only pray for change
But when will we become the change

I know, there is beauty in this land
Like you, this is my home, and my heritage.
I still believe, but this darkness impedes my vision
Like a daily reminder of the futility of our situation
Like the Next headline at the news stand
A reflection of the problem at hand

We may be different, but we share the same pain
The pride of this nation rests in our palms….

This Darkness

Darkness.
Constant darkness.
Yesterday, today, and without a doubt tomorrow.
I look out to my neighbour ,
He too has been engulfed by the darkness.
Grey shadows dance along on the street below,
Dreary souls returning from their slave shifts in the city, to this darkness.
This darkness, a cloak for wicked minds to stage their attacks,
At this evil hour, waiting in dark corners to strike on innocence.
This darkness has consumed us, our eyes become blinded, accustomed to this most usual of surroundings.
Our bodies, tired from countless restless nights.
As assured as the rising sun, this darkness will come,
After suffering the unrelenting heat of the midday sun,
The night, this darkness, offers no succour to our condition.
I used to have a torch to guide my steps, it reminded me to hope,
But batteries die, and hope fades,
Replaced by an undeniable anger, while this darkness reigns.
Huddled in groups we discuss this darkness.
Why do they not even try,
Their lives are filled with light, but it is as if they do not see,
They do not understand our plight, it is as if they are blinded by that same light.
Seeing only what they want to see,
Consumed by hidden agenda's and filling the pockets of their agbada's,
Surrounded by God fathers, false contractors and numerous benefactors.
This darkness, this disappointed look on our faces,
The power horse of our economy is lying in pieces,
A nation with no power has no business at the races.
I nod my head in silent remorse,
This darkness, this shame, this terrible frame, still remains the same,
No addition, only degradation, no development, just crooked involvement .
This darkness some how remains off the priority list, its solution covered by a mist.
Standing on my balcony, I hear the usual loud noise associated with the many generators.
Everyone for himself, what about those left on the shelf.
You and I pay for this darkness, but there is no customer support to deal with our unhappiness.
When will our people see this time of darkness as a life they once lived.
When will we have a generation of children, who do not have to dance in the brief moments when darkness finally turns to...
light.

I get asked so many times why Thoughts on a page is not available in Nigeria, well by now most people know the answer to that question. The book culture in Nigeria is improving with people like Jude Dibia, Biyi Bandele and Chimamanda building the bridges for other aspiring writers to cross, and making the business of publishing lucrative for the companies to join. Its been a full year since Thoughts on a page was available online, and i would like to apologise to the Nigerian based members of the group as well as my friends at Taruwa for the delay in making it available in Nigeria. The Nigerian version contains more pieces that the online version, as a sign of gratitude for your support. price and availability will be announced soon.

When in moments of silence, it'll be me living in your thoughts
When it all seems in vain, together we'll bear the pain
When you are hurt, I'll be there to kiss it better
When you pray, it'll be of love forever
When you jump, I'll be right there beside you
When you hope, I'll make sure the future comes to you

Treat him like you would any other, don’t judge a book by its cover
We're not all 419er's and drug pushers, we have hard working mothers and fathers

For how long will we continue to suffer, our identity has been dragged through the gutter
We do not all have the same character, but to some it does not even matter
I can never present any better, 'cause my compatriots and I will always be of the same feathers

If you see my sister, please share with her your umbrella
She may need it more than ever, don’t be afraid to help her
We are not all prostitutes and child sellers

We live in a system where our voices go through a muffler
We are survivors, in a society always trying to drag us under
Damaged by our environment, we ask not to be misunderstood any longer

If you see my mother, please offer to seat next to her
In our family she is the centre, a wonderful sage and carer
We are not all noise makers and trouble makers

Our leaders always have an agenda
Its difficult to get heard over the campaign speakers
Promising us the same over and over
A stable source of power, much needed clean water
Reduction in unnecessary deaths to AIDs and Malaria

If you see my father, know that he is a hard worker
He could be your adviser, no matter the stress you're under
We are not all corrupt and unethical

Raise your glasses even higher, celebrate the people who shine brighter
Whether you live in LA or Ebutta Metta
From Kaduna to the Niger Delta
We all deserve to be treated better
Stand up for your rights my brother
Being Nigerian does not make you inferior
Speak out for your future my sister
Being Nigerian does not mean you should accept lesser
From your teacher or your leader

"The Struggle"

The Struggle

The people look out unto the destruction, the land has been battered beyond recognition.
The laws were only made to be broken, by power hungry chiefs who are never outspoken.
The struggle began a long time ago, when the children were only too young to know
The corrupt minds of the leaders never thought about the future, the welfare of the people,
they never tried to secure.
Their visions, only of grand illusions, of empty desires and luxury mansions.
The people are left with empty dreams of city scenes, praying for strength and simple things.
Hanging on to the hope of a revival, if only for the sake of their children's survival.
The land, separated and divided, the people, forgotten and disregarded.
You've got to fend for yourself, in a land that is everyman for himself.
The few chosen to lead the many, have been enchanted by the honey.
The people work real hard, trying to rebuild the once glorious land.
Their faces epitomize the struggle, for the city has turned into a jungle.
In this desolate land, nothing is simple, but there is hope, for God does not forget his people.
The people are forced to respect, those people whom they constantly suspect.
Forced to say "yes sir", to those with no good desire.
They see this broken city through the tinted windows of their black limos, without even hurried glances
in their rear view mirrors.
The people are forced to plead for their right, while their leaders smile like everything's alright.
Young men and women who cant see hope, to them, this is real life, not a daily soap,
Forced to make statements like "I hustle" when asked what they do for an occupation, in this city
of depression and constant desperation,
Living dark nights of fraud, theft and prostitution, in the search of a soulless and empty solution.
Did you read the news today?, how much money is being wasted day by day?
The people are being treated like they are illiterate, corruption, eating away the city at an alarming rate
The people are left with little, told they have to settle
Told to accept their fate, without a sense of any distaste
The morning resumes, for the people, the struggle continues.

So roses may be red, and violets, blue
But the one guaranteed to make me smile will always be you
From my roots I have sprung, but with you I grow branches and remain strong.
The colours of love may be different, but the beauty remains ever present
My joy comes with the sunrise, welcomed by a blossom, a beautiful surprise
Come rain, come shine, you and I remain inspired
The romantic glow between us seemingly conspired but simply natural, effortless and unprocessed
You are the reason I've come to admire life in a whole new way
Bringing hope that together we can always succeed come what may
Our love, feels as natural as the waves crashing on a sandy shore
I believe, I look to the future feeling restfully assured
I'm so into you
I've fallen so deep, with you
We took the leap, hand in hand
Not knowing what the future holds or where we may land
But we live every second to make each other happy
With every kiss I fall in love all over again
Your love cleanses like the beautiful rain
Cant think of being with anyone else, no one else will do
Where else would I feel as special as I do right here with you
And when you're not there
I miss you, when all I hear is your voice and I have to imagine your smile
when I get a rush at the sound of my phone and not your knock on my door
I miss , the feeling that I'm tempted to touch your soft skin
I miss you, when in my heart you grin, as you hold me close
I miss you, every time you're not near, not here, not calling my name with your sweet voice
Just because in that moment you wanted me to run to you, to be there, to care
I promise to always be true to you

Trying to provide a better future for the next generation
There’s honour in their search for salvation
Put your hands together for the people
Struggling in the face of so much adversity
There’s beauty in the strength of their versatility
There’s hope in the beauty of their creativity
Cos It’s a bittersweet drama set in reality
Stand up for the people
The streets are filled with unsung heroes
Each one of them with thousands of their stories
Young faces with grown minds
Young minds with grown up scars
They grow up too fast
In a youth that doesn’t last
Let’s celebrate the people
Ready for the fight, ready to take flight
Spread their wings and fly to a new height
The ones who’ll never feel unequal

They forget the myriad of excuses
They prepare for the tests that life may present

We are... a collection of beautiful minds.
We are...a nucleus of energy from inside.
Our diversity is not our adversary, It only confirms our individuality.
Our ability, to remain creative. In our own way, be productive.
We all have the power to reach higher.
We all have the foresight to dream further.
We may be surrounded by negativity, but we can survive the hostility
Look to the heavens for inspiration, we shall not be misguided by desperation.
Together we can be a force to be reckoned with, and create a better future, in which we all make it.

The long journey tests our weary bones and sore behinds
Time seems to stand still as city lights fade
Mama would always be there standing by her door
With hugs and tears of joy in her eyes
"Nno"*
"Happy Chrisimasi, Happy Chrisimasi"
The memory of her voice still stays with me
The lines on her skin portray her wisdom
Her beautiful wrinkled palm grabs yours as she pulls you closer
Her living room is filled with photos from years past
Black and white photos in wooden frames
Birthdays, weddings, funerals
Like a museum of personal history,
Every photo with its own story
Mum on her first bike, her first degree, her first child
Memories so precious to leave behind
I remember when I used to think the TV with the shutters was cool
And papa's lap was school
And mama's four post bed was my bouncy castle
And Papa's grand father clock was a wonder
And the tree outside was my little world
Bottle tops for people and matchboxes for cars
Stones for houses and sticks for bridges
Getting dirty in the rustic red sand , I held happiness in my hand
Christmas day was great, we got dressed in our best
There were always so many people there
Family from everywhere, Cousins I never knew I had
After church we'd visit them all
One by one we'd reconnect over our memories
Of last Christmas, last year, last time I saw you
You were this high, you've grown so tall,
Everyone gathered at the table, we would share a meal
Food meant the tomatoes and vegetables from mama's farm
And pineapple and banana from the tree behind the house
And one of the chickens that ran around the day before
The streets are always filled with olobo, Atilogwu, and Egwu Aja dancers
They entertain from house to house
Their colourful dresses, their scary masks
They dance with so much energy as they raise the red dust off the ground
We would spend hours watching them, no one could stop us running around
Sometimes looking through windows when we were too scared
When the time came to return to the city
Mama would pray, and then she would give us some money
It was always sad to leave,
I still remember the last time I saw her
She still gave me money
Mama, I said, "I should be giving you money"
No, she said," Unu bu umuaka'm"*
Then she gave us each a piece of cloth from her collection
Her last words were usually
"Ije oma"*, "Chwukwu gozie gi"*
The trip back would be spent recounting the days spent with mama
The trees, the fresh air, the food, and the people
When we got back, the concrete jungle of the city always paled
We always looked forward to the next time we'd see her again
The woman who named me Chiedu*,and called me her little monkey banana

Consider this my letter to heaven
Happy Chrisimasi mama, we will never forget

Homecoming

I looked out the window, on the little scattered houses, and little cars
The crowded streets and polluted skies
The patches of darkness and light, tin roofs on concrete rooms
Everything seems so quiet from up here
The chaos of the city, just a familiar picture in the distance
The people go on with life as normal with no resistance
With each passing moment the view becomes clearer
I can make out the yellow danfo buses, as the sounds in my imagination get louder
I immerse myself in my thoughts, as I stare blankly into the seat in front of me
The engine shudders, the chairs shake and the frame rattles
The wheels hit the tarmac and the frame screeches to a halt
The applause rings out, the smiles break out
This is it, my homecoming
The warm heat sips into my skin, welcoming me with vigour
The arrivals hall is packed, and we’re all staring at each other
In our minds we all know the land outside is like no other
We'll all be having different experiences, but there'll be a lot of shared thoughts
Large boxes dance along on the one working machine
The sweat beads start to appear, as the people start to disappear
I swear there's a conspiracy, because my little box seems like it would never appear
When it finally does, the hall is almost empty
I walk to the door with the big burly men
Who stare me down like I need to say my amen's
The way they stare would make you act suspicious
But the lady by their side looked to be auspicious
I flash a smile and tell her I'm a student back from my education
To my surprise she waves me past, if only for a donation
The ride home is long; the radio plays a familiar song
I'm still on a journey that began yesterday, for some it’s the start of a brand new day
There are people on the backs of okada's, old men perched on their verandas
The generators have already begun their daily shift, there's workers waiting for a lift
The lady frying akara is working hard with a smile, once there's life there's hope, there's no denial
The baby on her back wont stop crying, not sharing the mothers desire to keep on struggling
The streets are always busy, the people are always noisy
The familiar sound of home, it’s been a while since I've been gone
The street hawkers outside my window are trying to catch my attention
But my minds far away, focused only on the situation
Every image unlocks memories, stories from the past that could fill libraries
My past is in every corner of these streets, how things have changed
Life has moved on, for others it still remains the same
This land stays on my mind, no matter how far away I go
This is where I'm from; I'm back where I belong
This is where I was born, and where I'd always return
This land is full of scars; don’t be deceived by the luxurious cars
But there's hope in the futures eyes, a chance that we have the power to change our lives
This is where my future lies; I have visions of touching the skies
It’s a tough decision to make; the difficulties may be hard to take
But you have to look through the clouds; the struggle comes with good rewards
Mother waits at the front door with a familiar pose and a big smile
Comfort comes with the warm embrace of family
Joy comes from conversations not disturbed by any anomaly
A new phase in my life is just beginning
This is it, my homecoming.
